How a Bathroom Remodel Actually Goes

Nobody can tell you how long your bathroom takes. They can tell you what it is waiting on.

Every remodeling site publishes a number of days. Those numbers are written before anyone has seen your room, which makes them marketing rather than scheduling. What is genuinely useful in advance is the sequence, because the sequence is the same everywhere and it tells you which questions to ask.

Stage 1: the consultation

Someone comes to the house and looks at the actual room. This is free, and it is the point where a real price becomes possible. Nothing before this is a price. Come with the list of what bothers you about the room, and whether there is another bathroom in the house you can live on.

Stage 2: scope and selections

What is being changed, and what specifically is going in. Tile selections, fixtures, vanity and storage, lighting. This is the stage most homeowners underestimate, and it is also the stage where delay is fully avoidable. Every unmade decision here becomes a stopped job later.

Stage 3: demo

The old room comes out. This is where an older house declares itself. What is behind the tile is not a mystery anybody enjoys, but it is the reason a scope written from a photograph is worth so little.

Stage 4: rough-in

Anything that has to happen inside the wall or under the floor: plumbing moves, electrical for lighting, ventilation. If the layout is changing, this is the stage that changes it. It is also where a permit and an inspection enter the picture if the job needs them, which the permits page covers.

Stage 5: surfaces

Waterproofing, tile, the shower or tub itself. Slow, exacting, and not a stage to rush, because everything that fails later fails here first.

Stage 6: fixtures, vanity, and the finish

Vanity and storage in, faucets and lighting hung, glass fitted. The room becomes a room again. This is the stage where a selection nobody made in stage 2 shows up as a gap.

Stage 7: the walkthrough

You look at it with the crew and say what is not right. That conversation is easier when the same crew has been there the whole way, which is how the operator describes running its projects.

Where the time actually goes

Two places, consistently. Something found at demo, which is unpredictable and is why an older house carries more slack. And a selection that was not made when the trade needed it, which is predictable and is the one you can eliminate.
